Do you ever feel cranky?
Welcome to my Monday Morning Message
I'll be honest with you. I am cranky.
I am not normally a cranky person, and I hate this feeling.
After getting back from vacation, I jumped right back into my life—and I was rather proud of myself. My suitcase was unpacked immediately. I did three loads of laundry. I made some serious progress on my inbox.
So where is the crankiness coming from?
Maybe it is the feeling that summer is beginning to slip away.
August is here, and I have one foot in "get back to work" mode and one foot still on vacation. Honestly, neither foot knows what it is doing.
I keep feeling as though I have to choose: dive back into life at full speed, or squeeze every last drop out of summer before September arrives.
But maybe I don't have to choose. Maybe both can be true.
Yes, the emails need answering. The schedule needs sorting out.
And also, it is still summer!
There is still time for a picnic dinner on the bluffs. An evening playing ping pong with my friends. An afternoon that has absolutely nothing to do with a list.
Maybe that is the lesson of these in-between moments: we do not always have to resolve them. We can be cranky and grateful at the same time. We can catch up on what matters without allowing the catching up to consume everything.
Tonight I will get a good night sleep. Tomorrow, I will handle the essentials—and then I will put a few things on my calendar that are purely for the joy of them. Not as a reward for finishing my list, but simply because it is August.
I am going to go see the movie The Odyssey. Sit on the beach with a good book. Go boogie boarding a few times.
What are the few things you want to protect before summer slips away?
Put them on your calendar before the catching up eats the whole month.
Have a wonderful week.
