The Eagle and the Mouse - Wings & Whiskers
Welcome to my Monday Morning Message
There’s a metaphor I love about the eagle and the mouse.
The eagle flies high above the trees and can see the wider picture. From that height, the eagle sees patterns, direction, weather coming in, and the path ahead.
The mouse, meanwhile, is down on the forest floor. It sees what is happening right now. The details. The movement. The obstacles. The tiny shifts that the eagle could never see from above.
I think this is a beautiful way to look at conversations between generations.
Those of us who have lived more years often have an eagle view. We can look back over decades and recognize patterns. We know that heartbreak passes. Careers shift. Children grow. What feels like the end of the world at 25 may become part of a much larger story.
But younger generations have the mouse view. They are living in the middle of today’s world. They understand the pace, the language, the technology, the pressures, and the realities of contemporary life in ways older generations may not.
Both views matter.
Too often, older adults think young people are not listening. Young people may think older adults are no longer relevant. And in that judgment, we miss each other.
What if we got curious instead?
What if we asked more questions and actually listened?
What if we sat together, not to correct or convince, but to understand?
The eagle can offer perspective.
The mouse can offer presence and relevance.
And when we listen to each other with respect, we all see more clearly. Eagles can't lecture. Mice can't roll their eyes.
This week, consider having one conversation with someone from a different generation. Ask what they are seeing from where they stand.
You may be surprised by how much there is to learn when you stay in discernment instead of judgement.
Have a beautiful week,
Colette
